CYCLING VIET NAM

10-day 3-Region Itinerary(10 Days)

Please note: This is a suggested itinerary. We are quite flexible: you may create an itinerary according to your interests, such as touring the Mekong Delta, the Central Highlands or Central Coastal Viet Nam.

Day 1 - Transfer from HCM city into the Highlands, reaching Di Linh via Bao Loc, the tea capital of Viet Nam. We have lunch at a temple in Bao Loc. Cycle through rolling tea plantation country with 1 downhill pass. Sleep in a clean guesthouse in Di Linh District.

Day 2 - To Li Liang (Gung Re) Waterfalls in the morning. Two downhill sections. After lunch, Go 76 km. to Da Lat. Short descent into the town from the top of the pass. Sightseeing in Da Lat, which is quite hilly, so it may well be on foot. Market, hilly streets, coolest climate in all of southern Viet Nam. Fun to walk around at night, too. Sleep at a quiet hotel in Da Lat.

Day 3 - Cycle past temperate vegetable farms, nurseries and pine forests to Suoi Vang. Visit the Koho ethnic museum, and the former King Bao Dai's villa. After a neat supper, walk around the hilly market area. Sleep in Da Lat.

Day 4 - Morning trip from Da Lat for double ascent to 1,600 m., then enjoy the terrific double descent to the Song Pha Valley. From cool pines and mountains to semi-desert. Due to strong headwinds during the SW monsoon from May to November, we will definitely use the bus to the coast. Can cycle 31 km. from Phan Rang to Ca Na Beach. Sleep in cottages in Ca Na.

Day 5 - From Ca Na to Mekong Delta town of Cao Lanh. Eat banh xeo, a delicious yellow crepe made with egg and rice flour, with minced meat and vegetables inside, eaten with lovely tasty herbs, some of which are only grown in the delta region. Sleep in a hotel in Cao Lanh.

Day 6 - Morning - Visit Xeo Quit, re-creation of National Liberation Front (NLF) HQ during the war. Afternoon - transfer to the charming river town of Hong Ngu. Will stop at the T- juntion of Voi Lua ferry and cycle to Hong Ngu via the Holy Religious See of the Hoa Hao Buddhist sect. It is fun to sit outside at night after our delicious delta food supper. Sleep in Hong Ngu at a family-run hotel. The hotel rules in English are hysterically funny!

Day 7 - All day - Visit Long Khanh Island in the Mekong River. Very rustic. Can go by bicycle-pulled carriage or we can cycle. The people are fantastic. Nice pagodas, both Cao Dai sect and a very old Vietnamese Buddhist temple. Evening city tour of Hong Ngu. Sleep in Hong Ngu.

Day 8 Transfer to Long Xuyen via Cu Lao Tay Island, another quiet island with small roads. We eat in Cho Moi and take a small road to the ferry to Long Xuyen town. Have delicious chicken and shrimp. Sleep at a big hotel in Long Xuyen.

Day 9 - Ride in van to junction with lovely 44-km. road to Tri Ton, in the magical Seven Mountains area, a nice change from the flat delta countryside. Ride after lunch to the shrine of the Viet Nam 'Killing Fields' by Khmer Rouge invaders in April 1978 at Ba Chuc Village. Transfer to Can Tho. Sleep at a mini-hotel.

Day 10 - Optional visit by hired boat to a Floating Market for an additional VND 200,000 total (2-3 people; free for groups of 4-6 people), then transfer back to Ho Chi Minh City. It is roughly a 5-6-hour journey through the delta across the Australian My Thuan bridge over the Mekong, back to the big city. Sleep at a hotel in HCM City.
